For the first time I actually managed to complete the Mah Jong requirements in a Yakuza game.įlash forward to Yakuza 0 where once again I spent quite a bit of time playing Mah Jong and I managed to do far better at it quicker thanks to the time spent with it in Ishin. I could string together a winning hand some of the time, and as I played more I got more acquainted with the game and got REALLY addicted to it! I probably spent more time playing that side mission than almost anything else in that game (bar grinding for materials, but that was just a pain in the ass). I ended up spending a lot of time hassling Barticle over on the Gamefaqs message boards (that man sure knows his Mah Jong!) and eventually the game "clicked". The I really tried to understand it in Ishin. In Yakuza 4 I was rubbish at it and didn't understand the rules so I never got very far in it.

However it did take a while for the game to click. I've got a couple of old Famicom Mah Jong games (released by Capcom) that I've still not got around to playing, and Mah Jong Fight Club for the Vita but I've not put enough time into that to form an opinion.īut I can't stress how much I love Mah Jong in the Yakuza series, its possibly my favourite side activity now.

My experience with Riichi Mah Jong is pretty much 100% from various Yakuza games (starting in Yakuza 4). I could talk for hours how much I love this side-activity but the most praise I can heap on it is in the presentation: So if you ever wished that you could go to a parlor and work your way up from the kiddy table to the experts, this is as close as you’re going to get. With the exception of Yakuza 3, most Yakuza games give you the freedom to drop in on a Mahjong parlor if you wanna earn cash or prizes.

The Yakuza series have so much content that would make most western open-world games shit bricks (sideways) and one of those side activities involve you playing Mahjong. This game fails at presentation…the colors are muted, the tiles are small that you need to squint your eyes and the music quality is bad. Winning is highly dependent on your knowledge of the anime (e.g, defeat Urabe by declaring Open Richi on a 4-ankou hand) which stifles any enjoyment of actually beating these guys on your own.

The anime was good so why was this game so bad? For starters, story mode is more of an Akagi Simulator than an actual game.
